Peugeot numbering system

I used to think that I understood the Peugeot numbering system and that a 403 was older than a 603.

Peugeot 403
In fact, there isn't a 603 because ...... well read the explanation of Peugeot's numbering system which I found on a forum on the internet called AussieFrogs.

"The first digit describes the size of the car (much like a BMW etc...) the 0 in the middle is a Peugeot trademark, and doesn’t really state anything. the number after the 0 describes the model series i.e. generally speaking a larger number equates to a newer car, the odd ball being the 309 which is of a similar age as the 205, 405, 505 etc... the reason for the strange number of the 309 was because it was not a Peugeot, rather a Talbot and Peugeot at the time wanted to disassociate from the rest of the Peugeot range as much as possible.

The 6 series is designated for touring and "luxury" cars

There was no 7 series Peugeot, however the 8 series is left for vans and people movers, and the 9 series has been used for motorsport purposes in the past.

In recent times the lines have been obscured. With 2 series Peugeot's being of similar or near identical size as 3 series Peugeots and 4 series Peugeots being of a similiar size to 5 series Peugeots.

The last 5 series Peugeot was also rear wheel drive, and I suspect unless Peugeot decides to make another rear wheel drive car there will never be another 5 series car.

So to sum that up, 1 to 3 series Peugeots generally relate to small cars and hatchbacks, 4 to 5 series are for medium sized sedans, the 6 series is for touring and luxury cars, the 8 series is for people movers and vans, and the 9 has been used on and off for motor sport purposes."

Another idea for making HO scale buildings

Arrived in Norfolk and saw these simple wooden semi-relief houses in a craft shop.

Basically, a block of wood with a sheet of thin wood for the roof and some simple wooden chimneys, painted in emulsion.

Didn't buy any because they do not depict French building styles, but clearly the principle could be adapted to the needs of my French layout.

Although I loved these diaries first time around, I'm finding the day-after-day, entry-after-entry carping, mocking, self-pitying and generally negative observations of Kenneth William's rather unattractive.

I do feel sorry for him in his situation but my mood is too optimistic these days to want to wallow in it with him.

Boards of Canada

Some more shots of the latest diorama/townscape.

Overall, pretty pleased, but still have some fiddling about to do.

The title track off the Boards of Canada EP, "In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country".

Extracted from Wikipedia.

"They have cited several acts that have influenced their work including Joni Mitchell, The Incredible String Band ("we have all the String Band records […] our rural sensibilities are similar"), The Beatles ("[they] really became enthralling to us through their psychedelism"), and My Bloody Valentine ("even if we don't sound like them, there's a connection in terms of the approach to music")."

And:

"Boards of Canada's music is reminiscent of the warm, analogue sounds of 1970s media and contains themes of childhood, nostalgia and the natural world. Mike and Marcus have mentioned the documentary films of the National Film Board of Canada, from which the group's name is derived, as a source of inspiration."

HO Scale Card Buildings

Finished etching, cutting and folding the enlarged ie HO scale version of the Mirontaine French town square and placed it in a possible position on the layout. The position of the ceramic church façade will require considerable thought - I've just left it tilted to one side at the moment.

Here is the townscape viewed from several angles.

Will leave things for a few days and then tweak things further. But, overall, I'm very pleased.

Norev Peugeot 204

Whilst up the attic trying to stem the flow of rain through the roof, came across a cardboard box of miscellaneous old toys, including the 1/43 scale plastic model of a Peugeot 204 by the French toy manufacturer, Norev.

Obviously, twice the size of HO scale but still of personal interest to me.

As a child, I found it disappointing that Norev manufactured their model cars from plastic as opposed to the die cast metal cars that I loved from Dinky, Corgi and Spot On. But now I see the charm of French plastic model cars.

Norev was founded by the Veron brothers, in the suburb of Villeurbanne, near Lyon, France, in 1946 (Rixon 2005, p. 54). Norev is the family name Veron, spelled backwards.

They introduced die cast metal models in 1971. The Wikipedia article on Norev is quite interesting.

The real thing.

HO scale card model - so far so good

Began the challenging task of cutting out and etching the folds in the enlarged version of the Mirontaine card town square.

To recap: Mirontaine of Bordeaux manufacture a fold up card model of a French town square which is smaller than HO scale. So, I got a reprographics firm to enlarge it by a factor of 1.7.

The original model sitting on a sheet of the HO scale enlarged version

Use a stylus rather than a knife to etch the folds

The knife is used to cut out the shapes.

Only tackled one section  today - the smaller original is in my hand.

Ready to assemble.

A telling comparison - looks more than a factor of 1.7 was involved.

Now it can sit next to the other HO scale buildings.

With nothing else available to read, I returned (with confidence) to these peerless diaries.

A friend of mine, who hadn't read the diaries, said that Kenneth Williams had always struck him as having been, "bitter as fuck". That pretty accurately sums up the diaries.
